Southeast Missouri Food Bank
Bootheel Food Bank will open its doors on September 1, 2008 with a new name. The not for profit food distribution organization has served the Southeast corner of the state of Missouri since 1985, though most people have never heard of them. “We serve the food insecure population,” said Karen Green, Executive Director for the Food Bank. “In laymen’s terms we help hungry families, those who are out of work, disabled or just don’t have enough income to put sufficient food on the table.” Please click the link below for more information.

The Salvation Army
It's nearly that time of year again, for the bells of the Salvation Army to begin ringing in funds to provide a helping hand to those residents of Sikeston in need. The Southern Scott County/Sikeston Chapter of the Salvation Army is beginning it's second year after a successful first year and is looking forward to the upcoming Red Kettle Christmas Campaign as it is the primary source of proceeds to fund the charity work of The Salvation Army. This alone does not meet the needs of the Sikeston families throughout the year, and donations from you, businesses and individuals, are needed to make our program truly be a success. If you are not able to make a donation, but still would like to help, we also are in-need of volunteers for bell ringing. Bell ringing for the Red Kettle Christmas Campaign begins with the Downtown Sikeston Open House (Nov. 14th and 15th only). Volunteers will be ringing at the Sikeston businesses of Food Giant (N. Main and E. Malone locations), Wal-Mart (both doors) November 26 from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., December 4, 11 and 18th from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m., Save-A-Lot, and Sikeston Factory Outlet Mall beginning Saturday Nov. 22nd and ring every Saturday from then through Dec. 20th; as well as, the Friday after Thanksgiving, Nov. 28th. If you or your group wishes to volunteer, please contact Nicole Woolsey at (573) 472-5222 as soon as possible to ensure that the date and times you are available can be scheduled. Any donation you can make will be greatly appreciated, whether it is through money or volunteering your time to ring bells. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact us at (573) 472-5222 or Nicole.J.Woolsey@dss.mo.gov. Please make checks payable to The Salvation Army/Sikeston Chapter and mail to 106 Arthur, Suite A, Sikeston, MO 63801. We look forward to a successful Red Kettle Christmas Campaign and thank you in advance for your continued support through your time and donations.

VNA Hospice Volunteer Training Scheduled
Most of us are reluctant to visit sick friends and family members fearing we may interfere in some way with a private time in their lives or unwittingly say or do something offensive. This discomfort robs many people of our support at a time when they need us most. Isolation and loneliness may actually add to their suffering. This does not have to be. 24th Annual Kow Pasture Klassic
24th Annual Kow Pasture Klassic – behind Shindler’s Tavern and St. Lawrence Parish in New Hamburg, Saturday, April 25th - Proceeds to benefit Kenny Rogers Children’s Center and Missouri Veteran’s Home. No need to be a golf pro for this one! Heck, even if you’ve never played golf in your life, there’s no doubt you’ll have a great time at the Kow Pasture Klassic! What is the Kow Pasture Klassic, you ask? Only the most unique game of “golf” you’ll probably ever play in your life - where the “t’s” are beer cans, the “golf balls” are actually tennis balls, and your golf “club” can be . . . well, whatever you want it to be! That’s right, use a hockey stick, a bat, a mannequin leg, a tennis racquet, a shovel, a boat orr, a pool stick, or even a plain ole’ golf club (if you want to be boring!) – it’s your choice, just bring it and your own tennis balls! You’ll play on one of the best 9-hole courses around. Teams of four are forming now, so don’t wait! All pre-paid registrants will receive Kow Pasture T-shirts and tickets for free beverages and burgers. For more information, call Rick & Heather Lawson, Shindler’s Tavern at 545-3709 or Mitch Miller, Kohlfeld Distributing at 243-3931. 100-Mile Yard Sale
SIKESTON-Visitors and residents will be out in full force along Route 25 Memorial Day weekend in search of bargains at the 100-Mile Yard Sale, but MoDOT wants you to remember the greatest savings of the event could be a life. "It's a fun weekend that people look forward to each year," says Traffic Engineer Craig Compas, "but we want people to remember that there's more traffic and more congestion along Route 25 this weekend than any other and drivers need to keep that in mind." MoDOT will do its part to bring the safety message to the forefront. Message boards will be in place along the route to alert drivers of the unusual traffic patterns and promote safe driving. "We really want drivers to be alert-to be aware of their surroundings, to be aware of sudden stops and to look for pedestrian traffic," Compas says. "It's a big event locally, and we want everyone to enjoy themselves and be as safe as possible." For more information, contact Compas at (573) 472-5310 or call MoDOT's Customer Service Center toll-free at 1-888-ASK-MODOT (1-888-275-6636). Click the link below for more information.
